My homage to American Tweed amps. The Model 2 circuit is what I have been featuring in all of my Filmosound rebuilds. The story behind the Model 2 circuit: I was building Supro Thunderbolts and Tweed Harvards in salvaged Hammond organ chassis. After a while I noticed that I liked the breakup and extra power from the Supro Thunderbolt phase inverter and output section better than the cathodyne-style featured in many of the Tweed Fenders. Around that time, I started I started getting requests to work on Filmosound 385s which feature the 5879 pentode in V1, and from that point I started adding pentodes in V1 to all of my amps, effectively blending all of my favorite amps (Fender & Gibson Tweed/Filmosounds, Supro Thunderbolt) into one amp.
With all of my amps, my goal is to get the signal from your fingers to the speaker the shortest route possible so as to capture all of the sonic information of your playing and to enrich the interactive experience of playing electric guitar through an amp. All of my builds are hardwired featuring turret or point to point construction. I employ thoughtful lead dress, component choice and DC filament voltage on V1 to minimize noise & maximize tone.
The Model 2 is made to order. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. I will reach out to you directly to confirm specs, color & format (i.e., cabinet, ammo can, etc.)
Duuuuuuude… it’s reaallllly nice. There’s a common feel with the phase inverter and power stage but the two preamps give a lot of latitude, plus the negative feedback control… man, having fun. Looking forward to a couple hours with it this weekend. Ran it into 2x10 alnicos, 2x12 Bandmaster cab with Oxfords, 2x12 Epiphone cab with Scumbacks. And… for something that’s 70+ years on some parts, it’s quiet and doesn’t snap crackle pop! The 5879 has some meaty poise to it, and the 6J7 just wants to rip… -Scott D Masco Model 2 Deluxe.
Billy… this amp is blowing my mind. I have never heard an amp sing until now. There is a level of clarity between the notes that makes it sound like each note is singing. Every note stands out in a chord. I don’t even want to plug any pedals into it. I’m stunned… It’s absolutely brilliant. Thanks Buddy! -Cody
